Moira Smiley Workshop and Concert at the Plainfield Opera House

October 23, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Moira Smiley – The Voice is a Traveler ~ Workshop: 2 pm ~ Performance 4 pm

Finally after, a 2020 COVID cancellation the Friends of the Plainfield Opera House are delighted to welcome Moira Smiley to the Opera House fall 2022 series! She and Tyler Bolles (bass) will present a concert called, “The Voice is a Traveler”. Moira is also offering a free workshop – open to all, no experience necessary.

Moira is a performer, composer and teacher who grew up in Vermont, attended Village Harmony camps and later taught Village Harmony sessions. Moira’s academic specialty is Early Music, and she has developed parallel experience with various folk traditions – especially early American, Irish, and Balkan vocal styles. By exploring the particularities of traditions, styles, and periods, she’s found something uniquely her own. She’s performed with the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Tune-Yards, Tim O’Brien, Eric Whitacre, Los Angeles Master Chorale, New World Symphony, Solas, and The Lyric String Quartet.

Moira has taught extensively around the world and she is a joyful teacher. Her subject is the singing voice and its ability to encompass an astounding range of expressive, linguistic, and stylistic colors. She is a multi-instrumentalist as well, and uses body percussion along with her singing. Here’s her description of the workshop:
Your Own Wild Voice with Moira Smiley

The human voice has astonishing range and color, and – as with our lungs & brains – we
may not use it to its full glory! This fast-paced, fun workshop playfully explodes your assumptions about your own voice. We will explore fresh, physical ways into singing. Eastern European and Appalachian songs will root you, while call & response, vocal improvising and movement will keep you discovering ever more inventive parts of you. Moira playfully draws out techniques, timbres and styles you always knew were in you as a singer or writer, but maybe hadn’t felt you could bring out! Singers of all experience levels are welcome.

“Some of the most captivating music you’ll hear from some of the sparest ingredients.”
The Providence Journal

Moira Smiley’s song ‘Refugee’ immediately caught my ear with its timely message and the urgency of her singing. There are many styles and themes on her mosaic of an album, Unzip the Horizon.
KCRW’s New & Noteworthy Release

World folk fans, take note: Moira Smiley & VOCO harness high-voltage harmonies with Smiley’s signature vocal arrangements. Not afraid to mix Bartok with street-singing – a genre-bending world tour of rootsy tunes. EXPECT GOOSEBUMPS.
