The Fyre and Lightning Consort, founded in 1974, is a trio of central Vermont musicians (Ellie Hayes, Kathy Light, and Steven Light) dedicated to the study and performance of medieval and Renaissance music. Throughout the years they have become increasingly interested in traditional music of the British Isles and the Sephardic Jewish song collections, and have recently added to their repertoire music from the Galician region of northern Spain.

Fyre and Lightning performs on a large collection of instruments, including lute, vielle, harp, hurdy-gurdy, recorders, whistle, bagpipes, cornemuse, and bass. Their lively and interesting approach has delighted audiences over the years. Of their recordings, Andy’s Front Hall Records wrote, “The Fyre and Lightning Consort presents this fascinating music on a variety of early instruments, and with a musicality that is sometimes lacking in other interpretations. Absolutely beautiful, first to last.”

Steven and Kathy Light are planning to relocate to the Minneapolis area this summer, so Fyre and Lightning will be performing its final concert on May 6, 2023 at 7 p.m. in the Plainfield Opera House.

The program will include medieval and traditional music of Galicia, music of the Flemish Renaissance, and music of Scotland and Ireland, including a number of tunes by the blind Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan.

Tickets are available online and at the door. Suggested donation is $20. For more information email slight@fyreandlightning.org, or call 802-498-3173, or go to plainfieldoperahousevt.org/2023winter-springseries.
