No amount of cool rainy weather can hold it back. Hepatica and spring beauty are blooming in rich hardwoods before the canopy leaves appear, and blue cohosh is unfurling its deep lavender stalks before flowering and turning green. Flocks of white-throated sparrows join the flow of birds heading north. And at Willoughby Falls on warmer days, steelhead trout are putting on a show, breaking the surface of the water, leaping again and again until they clear the falls to continue upstream to their clear, shallow-bottomed spawning gravel.
