Nature Watch, 11.17.21

Sun slipping farther and farther south as we tilt north, and all nature feels it. Birds gravitate to locations where shelter, food, and water are secure. I look for the last migrants, worrying about those that have not come through yet, or have, but in such small numbers! Seeds and fruits are gathered into nests, or if still on the plant or fallen to the ground, ready to germinate come spring, or be eaten, digested, and dispersed in the weeks and months ahead. And the animals! From invertebrates to insects, from rodents to bears, such a variety of adaptation to months of food scarcity and cold. Clear, bright days take our breath away, and by night the heavens rule with their silent clarity and brilliance. We scramble to prepare for the winter that lies just ahead!
