Colors start slowly! This sketch of our treeline, from 20 years ago, brings it home. Sugar maples today have not really started, although an occasional red maple has begun to blaze. And that gorgeous mahogany red of ash … only the ash cultivars, planted by the highway department, are in color here. It all lies ahead of us! Hold it all dear, especially the ash — that beautiful, still plentiful tree — in all its color range from yellow to vibrant red-brown, as they will pass from common to rare like the butternut.
